 - SLOW THE SYSTEM -
SUSTAINABLE FASHION SHOW
DSIGN LAB x Sustainable Youth Canada

In 2022, our team worked diligently with local fashion designers and curators, alongside the organization Sustainable Youth Canada, to organize a fashion show dedicated to questioning the norms of consumer culture and fast fashion. As a multimedia show, models walked on the runway in outfits carefully curated from accessible & sustainable sources (Effe, WAKEMAN, Snobshop, and Magasin du Chainon).

The center of the runway held a sculpture piece composed of waste materials created by local artist Malcolm Adamson, and the finale of the show cumulated in a moving performance art piece by multimedia artist Jan van Esch, illustrating the weight and strain which the fashion industry places on our planet.

With this project, our team set out to challenge current consumer standard, present alternatives in a high-fashion setting, and provide lens for self-reflection in the context of consumption for the viewer.

FIND OF THE WEEK

IMG_2476_edited.jpg

I was going through my usual thrifting routine at Eva B  on St-Laurent when I literally stumbled upon some old sewing patterns from the 80s (they were lying on the floor, lost in a pile of books and unidentifiable objects (??)), I even found one from Vogue! It turns out paper patterns go back to the middle of the 19th century and made their first appearance in the magazine Mme. Demorest’s Mirror of Fashion soon after, in 1860. Quite fascinating...

It seems that it is now my turn to make good use of them.
